About the mycommute.london journey planner

This is a free, no-signup London journey planner covering the entire Transport for London network — the Tube, the Overground, the Elizabeth line, the DLR, London buses, London Trams, the IFS Cloud Cable Car, and the bits of National Rail that fall inside the Oyster zone. Type a start and an end — a station name, a London postcode, or a landmark like "British Museum" or "King's Cross" — and you get several end-to-end options ranked by total journey time, with live disruption folded in.

It's built on TfL Open Data, the same feed TfL Go and station screens use. We don't store your queries, there's no account, and the planner itself is ad-free. The aim is to be the fastest way to answer "how do I get from A to B right now?" without any of the onboarding, install prompts, or premium tiers other London journey-planning apps lean on.

Depart at vs. arrive by — when to use each

The date selector accepts Today, Tomorrow, or any specific future date. Time accepts both quick 15-minute increments and any typed time, so 14:23 is fine. All three settings apply across every journey category the planner returns.

How the results are organised

The planner returns up to three sets of journeys for the same trip, so you can pick the one that matches your situation rather than just the technical fastest:

Each journey can be expanded to a step-by-step view showing every leg, every interchange, the live walking time at each change, and live arrival times for the train you'd actually catch. Tap "Show on map" to overlay the whole route on an interactive map — useful for unfamiliar areas, and for visualising why a planner sometimes routes you a "longer" way that's actually faster in clock time.

Step-free and accessibility routing — what it actually covers

Step-free routing is the single most misunderstood feature of London transit, so it's worth explaining what the labels mean. TfL distinguishes two levels:

When you switch the planner to show wheelchair routes, we ask TfL for the strict "step-free to vehicle" version first. If no such route exists between your two points, we fall back to "step-free to platform" and label the result accordingly, so you know whether you'll need staff assistance with a manual ramp at the train door.

Two related practical points: (1) some "step-free" stations are step-free in only one direction — e.g. step-free from street to platform but with a step up onto the train; (2) lift outages happen, and TfL doesn't always flag them in the routing feed. Tips that make the planner more useful

Why this might route differently to Citymapper or Google Maps

The three planners optimise for different things. Citymapper aggressively includes unofficial shortcuts — the famous Bond Street to Hanover Square walk between Jubilee and Elizabeth platforms, the Bank/Monument tunnel, the Canary Wharf interchange across the dock. Google Maps blends its own walking data with TfL's. This planner uses TfL's official routing, which is authoritative on what the network operators treat as a valid interchange. The trade-off: this planner is reliable for accessibility, for engineering closures, and for live disruption; Citymapper is usually a minute or two faster on dense central-London interchanges where the unofficial shortcuts apply.

Frequently asked questions

Does the planner include buses and National Rail?

Yes. Bus and walking legs appear in the "Suggested" results when they're part of the fastest route, and the "Bus only" section is there for when you want to avoid the Tube entirely. National Rail services inside the Oyster acceptance zone (most of Greater London) are included in routing.

Does it show fares?

Not at the moment. London fares depend on time of day, zones travelled, and the exact lines used in ways that are surprisingly hard to compute reliably from the routing data alone. Why are some interchanges showing very long wait times?

When the next service on your connecting line is more than a few minutes away, TfL pads the walking leg duration to include that wait. We split that into a separate "WAIT" badge so you can see what's actually walking time and what's standing on a platform. Common culprits: late evenings on the Bakerloo and Waterloo & City; weekends on the Metropolitan branches; engineering periods on the Circle/District/H&C.

Can I save journeys for later?

Not yet. For now your browser's bookmarks are the recommended workaround — once you've planned a journey, the URL doesn't currently encode the inputs, but bookmarking the planner page itself is a one-tap way back. A "recent journeys" feature is on the list.

Does it work for the Night Tube?

Yes. If you set a depart-at or arrive-by time that falls inside Night Tube hours on a Friday or Saturday night, the planner uses the Night Tube timetable for the five lines that run overnight: Central, Jubilee, Northern (Charing Cross branch), Piccadilly (excluding Terminal 4) and Victoria. How fresh is the disruption data?

It's pulled from TfL Open Data at the moment of your search — typically within a minute of TfL's own systems. The same feed drives the live status board on the homepage, which refreshes every 60 seconds.

Why does it sometimes fail to plan a journey?

The most common cause is ambiguous station names — "Edgware" is both a Tube station and a town, "Hampton" exists three times, and "King's Cross" is itself a hub with several distinct TfL stations underneath. When that happens, the planner shows a disambiguation list — pick the specific station you meant and it will replan. If you still get no result, the trip may have no valid public-transport route (rare inside Greater London but possible for far-out postcodes).
